Decarbonising water treatment

Water treatment's energy consumption is projected to more than double in the next 25 years, significantly impacting the cost and environmental footprint of water production. Currently, electricity can make up 25% to 40% of a wastewater treatment plant's annual operating budget. Water treatment contributes to 5% of greenhouse gas emissions today, which excludes the additional impact of the 80% of untreated wastewater released in to nature that also releases greenhouse gases.

Water scarcity is a pressing global issue, with many regions already facing water stress or scarcity. Reducing water usage contributes to broader environmental goals by conserving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with water treatment and transportation.
